Microsoft announced a new edition of Windows 10 pro designed to run on workstations or PCs with top notch, server grade hardware specs. The Windows 10 Pro for Workstations was crafted to meet the needs of heavy and advanced Windows users. Microsoft has hinted on some of the new functionality to expect when the new Windows edition is released. Here are some of the major features:
  • Resilient File system (ReFS): The Resilient File System (ReFS) will be enabled by default and will offer trusted protection against data corruption and loss. It also provides optimization for handling large data volumes and auto-correcting of corrupt data.
  • Persistent memory: With the use of non-volatile memory modules (NVDIMM-N) that have persistent memory, data read and write speeds in the new Windows edition has been bumped up many notches. Even more, the workstation retains files in the memory even after being switched off. Persistent much ?
  • Faster file sharing: Microsoft utilizes the Server Message Block technology (SMB direct) to provide amazing server transfer speeds with increased throughput, low latency, and low CPU utilization during large data transfer. SMB Direct also allows the use of network adapters with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) feature to facilitate this improved transfer at full speed.
  • Expanded hardware support: The Windows 10 Pro for Workstations brings improved hardware support that’ll harness the full power of PCs with Server grade hardware like Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors. The new edition will also support up to four physical CPUs and up to 6TB of RAM.
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will be released alongside the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update later this year.
