Microsoft is finally seeding its October update to Windows users. The Windows Engineering team and Windows Insiders have been hard at work testing and preparing the update for its release. The October 2018 update is the sixth major update to come to the OS. It is preceded by the November Update, Anniversary Update, Creators Update, Fall Creators Update, and the April 2018 Update.
The new update comes packed with a bunch of new features. This includes a revamped snipping tool experience, a dark theme for File Explorer, a cloud-powered clipboard that lets you copy and paste content across devices, and new web sign-in and fast sign-in. The new multitasking experience called Sets was dropped in the final release.
The dark theme explorer was the feature I looked forward to the most. The dark theme looks good but doesn’t yet match what Apple offers in the MacOS Mojave update.
Microsoft also bundled the new ‘Phone app’ experience; it lets you text on your Android phone using your computer and see the photos you took with your phone on your PC. If you install the Microsoft Launcher on your Android device, you will also be able to access your Timeline of recent PC activities on your phone.
Microsoft Edge improves on its E-reader abilities with an offline dictionary, grammar tools and learning tools in its reading view, and Line Focus (which highlights one to five lines in long pages to make reading easier). SwiftKey is also now available on the touch keyboard.
The update rolls out officially on October 9. You will get an update prompt on your PC when it arrives. You can also check for updates by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on Check for Updates option.
The latest official update is version 1809, build 17763. Go to Settings > System > About to confirm your current Windows build version.
