Super Eagles captain,
Mikel Obi, has ended his contract with Chinese Side, Tianjin Teda, one year before the expiration of his deal with the club.
The Nigerian international reportedly broke his contract for a number of reasons, including a need to spend more time with his family. However, Mikel is still not sure if he wants to make a return to Europe or continue his career in China.
The Nigerian was in prime performance for the Chinese outfit in the first half of the 2018 football season, but a series of injuries plagued his form in the second half of the season.
Speaking on his contract termination at TEDA, Mikel told Tianjin TV Sports New Vision:
“I broke the contract with the club, which means I will leave TEDS. As for my next stop, I am not sure yet, maybe I will return to Europe, maybe stay in China. Anyway, I would like to wish the TEDA team good luck next season.”
Mikel captained the Super Eagles to the
2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and despite their early exit from the tournament, the team managed to retain the credence of Nigerian fans around the world.
The forward opted to focus on his club after the tournament, and has ever since not made an appearance for Nigeria in any event.
According to French outlet, L’equipe, Turkish top-fight, Fenerbahçe, are interested in signing the 31-year old midfielder in the January transfer window.
