They beat Sunderland 4-2 to earn the third spot on the standings table. Zoltan Gera, Shane Long, Romelu Lukaku and Marc-Antoine Fortune all scored for Steve Clarke’s men while Craig Gardner and Stephan Sessegnon grabbed consolation goals for Sunderland. Victor Anichebe was again missing when Everton hosted Norwich City at home. The home side took an early lead through Scot, Steven Naismith before Cameroon’s big defender, Sebastien Bassong equalised at the 90th minute. Nedum Onuoha wasn’t on the bench as QPR’s visited Old Trafford to take on Manchester United. They got off to a flyer through James Mackie before United scored three goals via Johnny Evans, Darren Fletcher and Javier Hernandez in a space of 10 minutes to put the game to bed. Chelsea filed out for the first time since the departure of Roberto Di Matteo and the appointment of Rafa Benitez as interim coach, against a resolute Manchester City side. John Mikel Obi as usual marshalled the midfield for the Blues but was replaced midway through the second half by Spanish midfielder, Oriol Romeu. Victor Moses also made a substitute appearance but it was a dour game, ending in a draw. Carlton Uzoma Cole started West Ham’s game against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on the bench, with the manager Sam Allardyce preferring Malian striker, Modibo Maiga and Andy Carroll in attack. Tottenham Hotspur raced into a 3-0 lead through a Jermaine Defoe brace and a goal from Gareth Bale. Andy Carroll scored his first premier league of the season late on. Newcastle United’s horrendous run continued over the weekend losing out 2-0 to Southampton. Southampton manager, Nigel Adkins was in dire need of the win to save his job after reports of a replacement in the person of Roberto Di Matteo was mentioned in the media. Shola Ameobi was a 46th minute substitute while his brother, Sammy didn’t even make the bench.
