The big news from the event was Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team qualifying for the Olympics in a time of 3:14.09 to set a new National and African record. The quartet of Imaobong Nse Uko, Samson Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George and Chidi Okezie, displaced the Czech Republic and Ukraine to move up to the 15th spot on the Top List of qualifiers. In the men’s 4x100m relay, the quartet of Godson Brume, Usheoritse Itsekiri, Jerry Jakpa, and Enoch Adegoke, slightly improved on their Season’s Best to race to 38.53 seconds win in the event, but not enough to seal qualification for the Olympics. In the women’s 400m Hurdles event, Abasiono raced to a comfortable 58.82s win, beating Faith Dennis who finished second in 61.96s, while Temitope Adenuga finished third in 62.33s. Ezekiel Nathaniel in a time of 51.42s finished second in the men’s 400m Hurdles behind Senegal’s Ousmane Sidibe who finished first in a time of 51.22s, and ahead of Gbenga Bakre, who placed third in 53.38s. For the men’s 110m Hurdles, Abejoye Oyeniyi, held off Alex Al-Ameen and Wiseman Mukhtobe to run his sixth sub 14s this season and win in a time of 13.96s (+0.6). While Miracle Thompson won the women’s 100m Hurdles in a time of 14.24s (-1.3). With a leap of 15.50m, Monday Godwin finished second behind Cameroon’s Marcel Richard Mayack who jumped a Season’s Best of 16.32m to emerge winner of the men’s Triple Jump event. Another Cameroonian, Raymond Tchomf, finished third after leaping 15.44m. As expected, Esther Isah continued her brilliant run of form in the women’s High Jump. She recorded her third win in a week on Sunday after jumping a mark of 1.86m to win the event, beating her friend, Temitope Adesina, in the contest. Subsequently, David Aya beat Mike Edwards in the men’s High Jump event after scaling a mark of 2.10m to emerge the winner. Edwards settled for second place after jumping a height of 2.05m. Cyprian Oyedele also jumped 2.05m to finish third in the event. In the absence of Ese Brume, Mercy Abire dominated the women’s long jump after leaping a distance of 6.46m (+0.5) to emerge winner ahead of Tina Samson (6.19m, +1.9), and Oluwabukola Onamaki (5.92m).

In football, action continued in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as Nassarawa United and Kano Pillars closed in on Akwa United who sits top of the league table with a point. Akwa United suffered a 1-0 loss to Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Sunday, courtesy of a 15th-minute penalty converted by Samuel Kalu. In Lafia, Nassarawa United secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Rivers United to stay second on the league table, while Ebuka David’s 36th-minute strike was all Kano Pillars needed to see off FC Ifeanyi Uba to remain third on the log.
