  Nigeria’s powerlifting squad at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics have been impressive so far. Lucy Ejike won bronze in the women’s 61kg. Despite finishing third in the event, no Nigerian athlete is close to Lucy’s achievement in the history of the Paralympics since she made her debut in the 2000 Sydney Games. Lucy has won 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze in the Paralympics, she has not failed to make the podium since 2000.

Olaitan Ibrahim won another medal for Team Nigeria in powerlifting. In the women’s 67kg, Olaitan lifted a weight of 119kg to win bronze in Tokyo. The big win on Sunday, August 29, saw Nigeria’s Bose Omolayo win gold in the women’s powerlifting 79kg with a new Paralympic record of 141kg. It will be recalled that Omolayo in the 2016 Paralympics broke the women’s 79kg Paralympics Record to win gold with 138kg, and has gone on to break her Record in Tokyo. Nigeria’s Kingsley Ijomah made history in Tokyo after becoming the first African male athlete to qualify for Rowing in the Paralympics. Ijomah finished 5th in 11:15.07 to qualify for the Final B. However, he went on to finish 5th in the final in 12:10.51, missing out on a medal.

After making it 2 wins from 2 at the ongoing 2021 FIBA Afrobasket in Rwanda, D’Tigers suffered their first defeat on Sunday in the hands of Ivory Coast. Nigeria beat Mali, 81-73, in their first game before seeing off Kenya, 55-71, in their second game, but Coach Brown’s boys would suffer their first defeat to the Ivoirians, 68-77, on Sunday. In football, Super Eagles of Nigeria defender, Leon Balogun, commanded a Man-of-the-Match performance in the Old Firm derby as Rangers beat Celtic 1-0 in the Scottish Premier League. Balogun is expected to report to camp as the Super Eagles commence preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liberia in Lagos on Friday, September 3, 2021, and Cape Verde on Tuesday, September 7.
