  Nigerian mixed martial artist, Israel Adesanya, returned to winning ways on Saturday, June 12th, 2021, after beating his Italian opponent, Marvin Vettori, in the UFC 263 fight at the Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona, United States. The Stylebender outclassed Vettori to retain his 185-pound UFC middleweight belt after suffering defeat for the first time in his career during March’s showdown against Jan Blachowicz.

Ruth Usoro continued with her impressive performances lately and has gone on to win the women’s Triple Jump event at the NCAA Championships in Eugene. Usoro’s mark of 14.19m was all the Nigerian needed to emerge winner over Jasmine Moore, 14.13m (-0.2), and Michelle Fokam (14.04m). In the Nigeria Professional Football League, eight-time champions, Enyimba FC, were stunned by Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Sunday, June 13th, 2021.  A 19th minute strike from Samuel Lucio Kalu gifted Katsina the lead before a brace from Rasheed Ahmed in the 39th and 43rd minutes saw the hosts finish the first half comfortably with a 3-0 lead. The Peoples Elephants (Enyimba) would reduce the goals deficit in the second half through an Anayo Iwuala strike in the 52nd minute but it was not enough as Katsina remained disciplined till the end to get a vital 3-1 win against the Aba-based side. Enugu Rangers recorded the biggest win of the weekend at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday, thrashing Sunshine Stars 4-1. Rangers took an early lead through Ifeanyi Nweke in the 5th minute before Israel Abia extended their lead 20 minutes later. Godspower Aniefiok would make it 3-0 in the 35th minute as the home team finished the first half on a bright note.

The Enugu-based side continued from where they finished in the first half after Christian Nnaji scored their fourth goal in the 47th minute of the game. Sunshine would get their consolation strike through a penalty in the 52nd minute. Fans are not supposed to be present at match venues due to COVID-19 restrictions, but they were allowed in the encounter at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
