However, Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Akwa United, failed to maintain their 1-0 first-leg advantage over the Algerian side, CR Belouizdad, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the North Africans and were eliminated from the continental competition on Sunday. A 72nd-minute effort from Hicham Khalfallah, and Chemseddine Nessakh’s 84th-minute strike was all the Algerians needed to advance into the next round. Bayelsa United gave a good account of themselves in the CAF Confederations Cup after beating Guinean club, Ashanti Golden Boys, 4-2, to book a place in the next round of the competition. A brace from Okardi Inikurogha and solo efforts from Favour Martins and Emo James was enough to see off Moussa Keita’s brace for the Guineans. Bayelsa United have been pitched against Tunisian side, CS Sfaxien in the next round of the competition.
