Eyimba off to a great start against Djoliba in CAF Confederations Cup opener

Nigeria’s sole club in the CAF Confederations Cup, Eyimba FC, had a great start with their group opener on Sunday as they defeated competition Djoliba 2-0 in an impressive 90 mins encounter. The first half of the game saw Djoliba prove why they made it to the Cup in the first place as they away side successfully withstood the 2003 and 2004 CAF champions from scoring, ending the first half 0-0 at the UJ Esuene Stadium. However, three minutes into the first half, Eyimba made it to the scoreboard, thanks to an impressive finish by Isiaka Oladuntoye. At this point the People’s Elephants kept throbbing the visitors side of the field in search of a doubler, but failed to do so. With about 10 minutes left on the click Stanley Dimgba put the match beyond Djoliba’s reach when he scored a penalty in the 81st minute to double Eyimba’s lead.

Iwobi ends nine-game goal drought for Arsenal

Super Eagles and Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi ended his nine-game EPL goal drought in Sunday’s encounter against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium. Iwobi scored the fourth of 5 goals for Arsenal against Burnley in his 20th start for the English club this season to mark veteran coach Arsene Wenger’s last game with the Gunners. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened scoring for Arsenal in the 14th minutes and it wasn’t until the extra minutes of the first half that Alexandre Lacazette doubled the lead in the 45+3’ minute. Sead Kolasinac made it 3-0 in the 54th minute. Iwobi fired a shot into the roof of the net to make it 4-0 in the 64th minute. Aubameyang scored his second goal in the encounter in the 75th minute to bring the scores to 5-0.

Moses makes assist against Liverpool

At Stamford Bridge, Victor Moses provided an assist in his 24th EPL start for Chelsea this season as they defeated Liverpool 1-0. With three points added to their tally, Chelsea now have 69 points, two points behind fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur. Oliver Giroud gave Chelsea their victory when he headed home Moses’ precise cross from the rich flank in the 32nd minute. Chelsea who have hopes of finishing in top four in the Premier League have two more games to go, same as Spurs, while Liverpool in third place have only one game left.

NPFL: Lobi Stars maintain 1st place on NPFL table

Lobi Stars extended their reign atop the Nigeria Professional Football League table with three more points to their tally as they won Sunshine Stars 1-0 at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi on Sunday. Lobi took the lead in the 17th minute via a goal from Kehinde Adeyemi and are now on 37 points, five points ahead of second placed Kano Pillars. Kano pillars maintained second position, taking home 1 point as they drew Heartland 1-0 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. Host team Heartland took the lead in the 27th minute via Ekechukwu Nwadike, however Pillars equalized in the 61st minute thank to Nyima Nwagua. Kano Pillars are now on 32 points, two points ahead of third placed Katsina United. Katsina United defeated champions Plateau United 1-0 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina. Destiny Ashdi scored the only goal of the game to give Katsina United who now stand in third place on the NPFL table a well deserved win. Former third placed team Niger Tornadoes could not maintain their position on the table as they suffered a 3-0 defeat against MFMFC at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.
