A potential mega-bout between Anthony Joshua and the winner of Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury’s clash on December is the topic on everyone’s lips in world boxing.
However, without a sanction by the WBC (World Boxing Council), the title-fight would never happen and, essentially, the winner cannot take the WBC title.
Joshua currently holds the WBA (World Boxing Association), IBF (International Boxing Federation), and WBO (World Boxing Organization) titles in the heavyweight division, and Wilder has the WBC title. If Fury bends to the laws of the WBC, the winner between him and Wilder will face Joshua in an undisputed world heavyweight match, potentially taking place at the Wembley Stadium in April 2019.
The WBC has ruled not to get in the way of what could easily be the biggest boxing showdown of 2019.
According to Mauricio Sulaiman, the winner of the clash between Wilder and Fury has the blessings of the WBC to face Joshua next year.
“That’s a fight the WBC has just ruled to support. During our conversation, a ruling of the mandatory status included the provision of trying to make the winner of Fury-Wilder, against Joshua.
“I’m not certain about any contract. That’s private agreement, but the WBC is of course the one that orders the fights, so our position is that we want to see the ultimate heavyweight fight, which involves Joshua and involves the WBC champion.”
