President of the West African Boxing Union, Remi Aboderin, has expressed his fulfillment as the nation counts the days until the
World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Super Featherweight title fight, scheduled for the
GOtv Boxing Night 17 in Lagos.
Aboderin, who is also the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, enthused that this development is an indication that boxing in Nigeria has taken a well-deserved turn in the right direction.
The fight, which is one of the eight bouts scheduled for the event holding at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, Lagos, will see Nigeria’s Seun Wahab take on Tanzania’s Issa Nampepeche for the world title.
“Four years ago, we could not have imagined that a prestigious title bout such as this will take place in the country, as the fortunes of boxing locally had plummeted.
“It is worthy of note that the WBF Intercontinental title is just a tier below the world title in the category. It puts the winner in the frame for the world title. This demonstrates how far GOtv Boxing Night, which began in 2014, has brought boxing.”

Aboderin went on to laud the sponsors of the event for their investment in boxing, which is a source of hope to youths in Nigeria.
The event which is billed for the Friday,
December 28, 2018, will feature performances from Burna Boy, Wande Coal,
Teniola and Daddy Showkey.
US-based Nigerian boxer, Femi Oyeleye, is expected to take on Meshack Nwakemwa of Tanzania at the event.
Local title holders including WABU lightweight champion, Rilwan Oladosu, and African Boxing Union lightweight champion, Oto Joseph will also be present at the event, alongside Olaide Fijabi, Ridwan Oyekola and Nurudeen Fatai.
