VLC media player, one of the world’s most widely used media players (with over 100 million downloads), now has support for 360° video and image playback. The new features debut in the latest preview release called VLC 360 (VLC 3.0 technical preview) which was made in collaboration with Giroptic.
VLC media player happens to be the first of its kind to support 360° playback for videos and images. Its 360° video playback uses the Spatial Video spec, while the 360° image and wide-angle panoramas playback follow the Spherical spec. Navigating the 360° environment is done using the mouse and keyboard since most PCs do not come with the required sensors for viewing 360° med.
The feature will be available on Android, iOS and Xbox when the final version of VLC 3.0 is released, and it’ll make use of the phone sensors for navigation.
We also expect a version of VLC that will support virtual reality on devices like Vive, Daydream, Oculus and OSVR, and 3D audio playback with support for head tracking headphones.
Meanwhile, you can download VLC 360 for Windows and MacOS.
