The United States President, Barack Obama has invited President Goodluck Jonathan for talks in Washington, according to a letter delivered by Wendy Sherman, United States Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs and the lead representative of the United States to the US/Nigeria Bi-National commission meeting. According to the Under-Secretary of State, President Obama is inviting President Jonathan for talks on issues bordering on terrorist activities in Africa, and a host of other issues. “The bi-national commission is really an invaluable tool for both nations to work together for a strong relationship, especially to support Nigeria as it moves forward to tackle its challenges,” Sherman said. She noted that matters to be discussed at the meeting range from security to governance, education and agriculture. Sherman cited Nigeria’s role on the United Nation’s Security Council and around the world as some of the reasons it is an important nation. “It is the head of the Committee on Democracy and has been leader in so many ways, like in ECOWAS as a peace-keeper all around the world. These are the partnerships that are important to us. Secretary Kerry had a meeting with President Jonathan in Addis at the AU summit, and so, we look for every opportunity to strengthen our relationship,” she said.
