Applications are now open for the 2026 United Nations OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Program. Originally launched in 1997 by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as part of the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, this initiative aims to equip indigenous persons with knowledge about UN systems and mechanisms focused on human rights issues, especially those affecting indigenous populations. Graduates of this training are enhanced in their ability to help their organisations and communities protect and promote their rights.

Fellows from all 4 language groups participate in shared training sessions with simultaneous interpretation over a 4-week duration in Geneva. The UN OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship is strategically timed to coincide with the annual meeting of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (typically conducted in June/July each year), allowing participants to actively contribute to the Mechanism’s work.
Who Can Apply?
- Candidates must have indigenous ancestry (non-indigenous persons are ineligible, even if they maintain ties to indigenous communities and/or organisations).
- Indigenous candidates are particularly welcomed, especially women, and persons with disabilities.
- Absence of formal educational credentials should not discourage applicants from participating in the IFP, given the socio-economic barriers that frequently prevent indigenous peoples from accessing traditional educational opportunities.
- Participants must agree to train other indigenous people when they return to their communities/organisations.
- Nominees must receive backing and endorsement from their indigenous organization and/or community. The supporting organisation should preferably have a defined constituency or membership and demonstrate representativeness.
- Candidates should demonstrate solid working competency in the instructional language.
