The Almeria striker has expressed his desire to feature at more AFCON tournaments for the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles of Nigeria and Almeria of Spain forward Sadiq Umar has expressed his delight at featuring in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations despite the early elimination of the Nigerian national team from the continental showpiece.Read more about Sports
The Spain-based striker played in all of Nigeria’s four games at the 2021 Nations Cup in Cameroon and scored one during the last group game against Guinea Bissau which ended 2-0 in favour of the three-time African champions. Featuring at the competition meant Sadiq Umar has represented Nigeria in two major competitive outings. He was part of the national U-23 squad that won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Sadiq was subject to criticism during the tournament (2021 AFCON) after failing to impress in his first three games, but he was hailed in Nigeria’s last game against Tunisia after threatening the Carthage Eagles defence when subbed into the encounter. “Playing at AFCON 2021 is an experience that I would never forget in a hurry,’’ Sadiq revealed.

“You dream of playing in a competition like this and to actualize it is something I can never forget in a hurry. “I hope to have the opportunity of playing in more AFCONs and most importantly the World Cup.’’ The Super Eagles were knocked out of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon on Sunday, January 23, 2022, after Tunisia beat them 1-0 in the second round of 16, courtesy of a 47th-minute strike from Youssef Msakni. Nigeria will now look to work hard towards securing a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after being drawn in a two-legged playoff clash against the Black Stars of Ghana.
