As exciting as attending a beach party, choosing the right outfit and clothing accessories can be mentally taxing. In Nigeria, being modest in dressing is key to avoiding trouble. This makes the choice of what to wear an issue for most first-timers. So here are some ideas on what to pack:
- Kaftan Sarong/Floral Chiffon Dress – This is mainly for the ladies. You could choose to wear this on top of your swimsuit if you intend to go swimming. It’s usually see-through or slightly opaque, so it is best to have a bikini or swimsuit underneath either of these options. The floral chiffon dress can be knee-length or ankle-length, your choice. The Kaftan Sarong can be skimpy but must be below your butt. If they come in ankara print, even better. The more vibrant the colour, the more eye-catching it will be.
- Shorts/Maxi Skirts/Joggers – For guys, knee-length shorts or jogger pants would do. For ladies, your thigh-high denim bum shorts or Ankara shorts would do nicely. If you prefer a skirt, then a chiffon maxi skirt is not a bad idea. Throw in a thigh-high slit on an Ankara printed maxi skirt and that works as well.
- Crop Top/Tank Top/T-Shirts – Most guys do Singlet at the beach on their beach ¾ shorts. But you can aim for a tank top too. For ladies, a crop top on a maxi skirt or denim full length or three-quarter trousers is cool. You can also wear a tank top or t-shirt with either bum shorts or trousers.

- Sandals – Sandals can work for both guys and girls. Ladies can wear either a wedge sandal or flat sandals depending on the type of party. Flip flips that match your outfit are okay for a normal day out at the beach, but they may not work for a party. But if you are the organizer or the party is a family affair, then they are okay, too.
- Romper/Playsuit – Rompers are thigh-high onesies that are great for a day at the beach. Some people call them playsuits and they are for ladies. Rompers cover just enough of your body to reduce lingering eyes and make it easy for you to play with the waves without needing to undress.
- Beach Bag – Depending on the need of the day, you may need to carry a beach bag. It can either be a tote bag or straw bag (i.e., rattans). If you are carrying drinks, then you need a bag with internal insulation to keep chunks of ice blocks from melting fast under the sun. You can also use a beach bag to keep your accessories and essential beach items like sunscreen, games, snacks, etc.
- Beach Accessories – Some items make regular beach clothes pop like a sunshade, sun hat/face cap, etc. So decide if you need handmade Ankara jewellery to compliment your plain coloured outfits as a pop of colour or not.
