A few artists have made their mark this year, some from total obscurity, and others only making a buzz in the local scene prior, but have disrupted the status quo enough this year to earn a place among Nigerian music’s biggest names. Here are our top 5.

Teni

Social media is already awash with the story of Teniola‘s meteoric rise to fame. She has worked her way to the top, without an album, and without the aid of a reality TV show, making herself unignorable in Nigeria’s contemporary music scene. In an industry where “Sexy” is the order of the day, she hugs her uniqueness, carries her self with confidence and is entirely unbothered by the trend even though some industry bigwigs have described her as “most unlikely to succeed”. We have her to thank for 2018 party bangers like “Askamaya” and, more recently, “Case”

Peruzzi

Even though Peruzzi has been active in the industry for a very long time, he had been considered what one may call “an underdog” in the industry until he was offered a record deal by Davido’s DMW, an opportunity which he grasped with both hands and maximized to unleash his creativity. Peruzzi has, through collaboration with other players in the industry, earned a place for himself among the heavyweights. Some Perruzi collaborations that have become 2018’s anthems include “Amaka” with 2baba, “Aje” with his DMW crew, and “Aza” with Duncan Mighty

Odunsi

Odunsi the Engine is a multi-talented instrumentalist, singer,and songwriter. He is one of the new breeds responsible for the diversity in Nigeria’s music scene. Within the year, he has featured on Billboard’s playlist, inspired M.I’s 2018 albums Rendezvous and Yung Denzl, and featuring on Spotify’s Viral 50. Odunsi’s debut album “Rare” featured an impressive list of stars and established music acts. The king of Alte Sound will headline His first major show on Christmas Eve in Lagos

Mystro

Mystro’s debut solo album made enough waves to catch the attention of some industry heavyweights including Wizkid and Tiwa Savage. His collaboration with Wizkid instantly shot him to fame and made him a toast of Nigerian music lovers. He has had two collaborations with Tiwa Savage and performed by her side at Tiwa’s history-making 02 Indigo Concert.

Victor AD

Victor ADs “Wetin We Gain” has become so popular that it has become a commonly used street lingua. The song was born out of the artiste’s frustration having worked hard in the music industry for several years without any meaningful success or recognition.
