Nigeria’s women national team, the Super Falcons, have advanced into the third round of qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after defeating the Algerian women’s national team by a 1-0 scoreline. The match which was held at the Agege Stadium, Lagos state, on Tuesday September 3, 2019, saw Thomas Dennerby‘s girls edge the contest with a 3-0 aggregate score after winning the first-leg 2-0 in Bilda, Algeria last week.
Three-time African footballer of the year, Asisat Oshoala, who plies her trade with FC Barcelona in Spain, captained the Nigerian side and gifted the team the victory, with her goal coming just before the hour mark. The Super Falcons dominated the game and had more possession of the ball, however, creating a clear-cut chance for goal proved very difficult for the West Africans as their North African opponents maintained a tight defense line.
However, China-based Nigerian forward, Francisca Ordega, missed a glorious opportunity to make the scoreline more emphatic and ease the pressure for the African champions with ten minutes left on the clock, but she headed the ball straight towards the Algerian goal keeper within close range. Towards the end of the game, the Algerians pushed for an equaliser and mounted pressure on the Super Falcons defense, however they could not find the back of the net as the Falcons cruised to victory.
With this result, Nigeria now awaits the winner between Mali and Ivory Coast for their next round clash.
