The Super Falcons of Nigeria started their Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifier on a positive note after beating their Algerian opponents 2-0 in the first leg match of the second round of qualifiers on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.

A first-half own goal from Algeria’s Isma Ouadah and an Amarachi Okoronkwo superb second-half strike was all the Falcons needed to claim the first-leg advantage at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker.

The Nigerian side will have to build on the momentum gained from the victory for the second-leg encounter next Tuesday, September 3, 2019, to advance into the third round of qualifiers for the global showpiece. Prior to the first-leg tie, the Algerian team were aiming to upset the Falcons with the presence of at least seven foreign-based professionals, but the Thomas Dennerby ladies started the game brightly.

Both teams could not find the back of the net until the 15th minute when the North African side conceded their first goal in the match from an Ouadah own goal which resulted from Alice Ogebe’s cross. Nigeria came close to getting their second goal of the game on several occasions, and their efforts were rewarded in the 54th minute via a long-range strike from Okoronkwo to seal the win in Bilda. With this result, Nigeria only needs a draw or just a goal deficit in the second-leg clash in Lagos to make it to the third round of qualifiers and confront the winner of the battle between Mali and Cote d’Ivoire.
