April 7 of every year is set out to celebrate and appreciate the efforts made by health workers in every part of the globe to ensure the wellbeing of human beings. Sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other relevant heath groups in the world, it is a day also meant to create awareness about the conditions of health workers and health sector of countries throughout the world.

This year’s observation of the World Health Day is accompanied with a theme- Support Nurses and Midwives. Today, we celebrate the efforts of nurses and midwives, and also remind world leaders of the vital role they play in ensuring the healthy wellbeing of the world. Without a doubt, nurses and other health workers are at the fore in the fight against the corona virus pandemic, providing high quality medical care, treatment, and looking out for Covid-19 patients. It cannot be argued that the absence of nurses would make the fight against Covid-19 harder or close to impossible.

Highlighting the current status of nursing globally, and making series of recommendations in order to ensure nursing and midwifery are strengthened globally, is the major focus of the World Health Organization and its partners this year.

April 7 is an outcome of the First World Health Assembly which was held in 1948, when it was decided that with effect from 1950, April 7 of every year will be celebrated as World Health Day. Also meant to celebrate the founding of the WHO, it is equally a unique platform to draw the attention of the globe towards subjects of major relevance to global health.
