As we all should know by now, Samsung announced the 9th iteration of their flagship Galaxy S line of devices – Galaxy S9 and S9+. The device is a beautiful work of art just like the S8 was. However, we will be taking a ride into the past, to 8 years ago when the first Samsung Galaxy S device was released by Samsung. Launched at a time when cameras were still predominantly VGA and no one cared about Snapchat filters, the Samsung Galaxy S is a pretty classy entry-level device with a 4.00-inch touchscreen display and a resolution of 480 pixels by 800 pixels. The device had a candy bar form factor, the design that has now evolved into curved gorilla glasses and infinity bezel-less displays. The device was powered by a 1GHz processor and had about 512MB of RAM (Yikes!!!). The phone had 16GB of internal storage, with microSD expansion up to 32GB. Primary camera was a 5-megapixel unit and VGA camera for selfies. At launch, the device shipped with Android 2.1 Éclair with the first version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface (TouchWiz 3.0) which allowed users to add, delete and rearrange home screens. TouchWiz has eventually evolved into Grace UX as seen on the Galaxy S8 and S9 and other recent Samsung devices. Connectivity wise, the Galaxy S had a Regular-SIM port, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM, and 3G and carried a 1500mAh removable battery. At the time of its release, the Galaxy S included the fastest graphical processing of any smartphone, was the thinnest smartphone at 9.9 mm and was the first Android phone to be certified for DivX HD. GSMArena.com described the Galaxy S as having “perfect audio quality,” claiming the phone’s superior all-round performance made it a “new leader of the Android pack. The Galaxy S also came in at #2 on TIME magazine’s “Top 10 Gadgets” of 2010, majorly for its Super AMOLED display. Over 25 million Galaxy S units had been sold as at 2013 and the device was quickly followed by the Samsung Galaxy SII which brought a better display, better camera, and more processing power.
