As a bid to use technology to drive and improve all sectors of our state’s economy, The MTN Foundation, affiliated to MTN Nigeria, was present in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday, 15th October, to hold an extensive training on I.C.T and business development using technology.
This training was also made possible courtesy of important bodies such as the Imo State Government, Google Incorporation, Digital Bridge Institute, Oracle, amidst other reputable organizations.
The beneficiaries of this training included youths, business owners and entrepreneurs in the state who were all well represented at the training.
We also had dignitaries from the state government who came to show that the Imo State government under the leadership of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, KSC understands the importance of Technology as it is the major driving tool for a better economy with global standards and their commitment to ensure that in no distant time Imo State leverages on the opportunities in Technology in building a bigger and better economy.
In attendance was The Secretary to the State Government, Hon Barr. Uche Onyeagocha who in his address acknowledged that the greatest asset Imo State has is it’s youth and challenged the trainees to come up with Innovative solutions to Social problems.
The Hon. Commissioner of Technology Development in the person of Nze Meekam K. Mgbenwelu was also present. In his speech he established that the Ministry of Technology Development is a new Ministry created by His Excellency, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, with the sole aim of developing the state using technology. The Commissioner in his speech pointed out accomplishments the Ministry has achieved under a short period of time and future plans the Ministry has to ensure the smooth transition of Imo State to becoming “The Technology Capital of Nigeria”. He also stated that Imo State has the highest literacy rate in Nigeria and majority of the population of the state are youths. It is based on this statistics that the Ministry is making conscious effort to create a technology-friendly ecosystem where the young ones can develop, build and implement their ideas using technology as a tool in solving many societal problems.
The training attracted the presence of dignitaries such as the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Hon. Barr. Uche Onyeaguocha, the Hon Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Reginald A. Ihebuzor, also in attendance was the Commissioner for Technology Development, Hon. Meekam K. Mgbenwelu , The Hon Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Barr. Emeka Ebiliekwe Felix, and many other dignitaries, which includes but not limited to Mr Dennis Okoro, Director of MTN Foundation, and Mr Reginald C. Okoye, also one of the directors of the foundation, and others.
A program such as this is one out of the many ways Imo state plans to develop to global standards with the use of technology.
