“I’m cutting my hair in 2 weeks time!” I announced at work one morning and everywhere went silent. “Cut your hair ke, kilode?” “Yep, I need to grow it back; I’m tired of the perm, trying to get natural again”. A shy colleague walked up to me later and asked “Do you really mean it, that you are gonna cut that hair?” “Of course, cut ‘em all of! I need to regenerate, lol” I replied. She walked quietly away. And after work hours that day, she came back and gave me a small pack “I bought ‘em for you, a belated birthday gift, thinking you’ll love them but I don’t know what to do with ‘em again since you are gonna cut that hair” and she walked off. I opened the small parcel and it was a pack of colorful glittering hair ribbons, the type you’ll see only in your dreams, the type young women wore to Victorian themed balls and it can only get you more beautiful and nothing more. It was my prerogative if I wanted to cut my hair but little did I know someone else had plans of appreciating it and most probably decorating it to be more beautiful. “It’s my hair, so damn what!?” Hello, it’s your life but every decision you take per second affects whatever plans that others have, either for themselves through you or for you. So simple was what happened but I sat down and I looked at how many times I have mapped out plans (like they teach in colleges, lol) to get a particular result, not minding if my neighbor likes the gas cylinder to be moved a little to her balcony or the housemaid that does the dishes is ever bothered if I invite my clan of friends over for a lousy eat –in. I’m guilty whenever it comes to taking decisions; “How soon can I have my order please, can you make it snappy?!” “Can we please wrap up this meeting? I have other business to attend to” “Oh I have a guest? Let him/her wait at the reception” “The gardener is quitting? Who knows who I can hire to replace him immediately, the flowers must die off!” It really downed on me that I’ve been living a world of “my own”, too bad. I did visit the salon the next 2 weeks and I asked my hairdresser to add hair extension, and I also showed her the type of ribbon she bought me, so she can fix me a style I can conveniently wear it on.     About the Author Oyinade is calm, passionate and detailed.
