The Funniest Election Highlights

The recently concluded presidential election had its fun moments, despite the tension and cut-throat attitudes of some participating Nigerians.

Here’s a compilation of funny highlights that made the season quite entertaining:

1. #JegaTime and “Jega-ed”: We have the witty Nigerian humour to thank for the latest additions to our slang dictionary. Jega Time (a play on “Nigerian time”) was coined from Jega’s unpunctuality in re-emerging after temporary briefing suspensions of election result announcements. Jega-ed on the other hand is defined below – based on Jega’s now famous reaction to Orubebe’s public outcry.

2. Orubebe’s public outcry: How can we mention Jega’s response without including what set it off in the first place, giving birth to another slang “Orubebetisis”The remarks of the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs have been considered as disorderly and humiliating. However, the PDP member has released a public apology in Leadership Newspaper.

3. “He’s certainly not 18!”: Mouths were ajar in response to this photograph released on Election Day (28th March). This certainly raises eyebrows about the country’s new voting system with PVCs.

4. “I voted for myself and the PDP”: That was President Goodluck Jonathan’s response after casting his vote to an interesting question asked by pressmen at a polling booth in Bayelsa State. Our response: Why wouldn’t he?

5. True to his words: Jonathan did say he won’t return as President. Power truly lies in the tongue.
