Your web address is also known as URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Have you attempted to count the number of characters on some URLs? At times it runs into hundreds. Now, imagine if you were to send that particular URL via SMS or if you were to paste it on Twitter which limits the number of characters that may be used in a message. That’s the reason Internet experts came up with a technique for shortening web addresses. This technique makes your URL shorter in length and still directs to the required page.
There are several websites you can visit if you intend to shorten a particular URL. But some popular ones include bitly.com, goo.gl, ow.ly and tiny.cc. Don’t mind what your shortened URL would look like. It may not contain characters related to your website, but whoever clicks on it will be directed to the intended page on your website.
Shortening your web address has numerous advantages:
- It makes your link more attractive and people will want to click on it.
- You can place it on platforms which limit the number of characters you can type (e.g. Twitter and Blackberry personal message).
- It can also be used while sending broadcast messages and bulk SMS.
- The number of clicks or visitors that hit your website daily can be monitored.
Who needs this technique? Everyone of course! Individuals and organisations use it every day so don’t be left out. Join the league and it will help promote your products and services.
