Following Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor’s decision not to compete in the usual 100m and 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, some top officials at the Sports Ministry are worried.
Okagbare who recently shattered the 22.07 seconds African 200m record set by Mary Onyali registered for only the 4x100m relay and not the usual 100m, long jump and 200m. It’s been said that Team Nigeria in Australia are flummoxed since finding out that Okagbare entered for one event.
However, according to the Guardian, a top official of the team, disclosed that some officials at the Sports Ministry, as well as the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) were ‘working’ on Okagbare to change her decision.
Also according to the Guardian, Team Nigeria were not the only people upset, the organisers of the Commonwealth Games are also unhappy that Okagbare will not be defending the sprint titles she won at the last Games.
