It was a very eventful evening for Nigeria on Friday at the God’swill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, where the Super Eagles displayed strength, sleight, and skill like we’ve not seen in a long time.
After a very snail-like start from the Eagles, that led to the Lions dominating the early minutes of the game, sending chills down the spine of Nigerian fans watching the match, the Super Eagles picked up the pace and scored in the 23rd minute, but the goal was waved off by the Referee as an offside. Nigerians went ballistic against the decision as this goal would have meant a 1-nil lead for the Nigerian side.
Not deterred, the Eagles kept at it, and in the 29th minute Odion Ighalo put the ball in the Cameroon net after a superb pass from skipper Mikel Obi.
Ighalo was issued a yellow card by the referee in the 31st minute after taking off his shirt to celebrate the opener.
Skipper John Mikel Obi scored another goal for Nigeria in the 42nd minute, solidifying Nigeria’s place before half time.
In the 55th minute, Victor Moses made a clean goal after an impressive counter attack to make it 3-0
In the 77th minute, Iheanacho, who came in for injured Ighalo, with an assist from Ogenyi Onasi made it 4-0 when he nodded past goalkeeper Fabrice Ondo.
The lions tried severally to score, but goalie Ikechukwu Ezenwa was prepared for anything and he proved himself as the first goalkeeper to go a game without conceding a goal in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers Group Stage.
This tremendous win has kept Nigeria at the top of the Group B table with 9 points, leading the Indomitable Lions with 7 points, Zambia and Algeria following respectively with 1 point each.
The reverse leg of the game will be in Yaounde on monday 4th September.
Super Eagles Coach G.Rohr said “the game was dedicated to Carl Ikeme” the Eagles goalie battling leukemia.
Nigerians have shown total support and trust in the management of G.Rohr and we know what to expect from the Eagles on monday.
