After a fantastic game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Friday, 1st September, that solidified Nigeria’s place at the top of the Group B table for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The Super Eagles have another reason to smile…. Minister for Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, praised the Nigerian Football Federation and the Eagles team for a job well done, knowing fully well what going to Russia for the World Cup run would mean for the nation. In a statement released from his office; told the Eagles that they will receive the sum of N20mil for the four goals scored against the Lions, following the promise of the federal government during a pep talk before the game to reward each goal with N5mil. “The Nigeria Football Federation has been on its toes to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the next World Cup. You worked very hard for this victory and Nigerians are proud of you for always raising the flag when it matters most. We know the consequences of not being at the World Cup in Russia in 2018. We determine the pulse of African sports and set the tune and agenda for Africa in global sports so it is very key and critical to us. Moreover, the absence of Nigeria at any international competition always denies the world of the pattern, style and tradition of the Nigerian variety of football so we will be going to Russia with another different pattern and style of football.” “The federal government will continue to support our players because they have been making so many sacrifices for the country. There is nothing we can do to compensate them for what they have done except to continue to appreciate and celebrate them in this critical journey to Russia” Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel, promised $10,000 (N3,565,000) for each goal the team scored against Cameroon, this would mean a total of $40000 for the four goals scored. A top team official told the media that team sponsor Aiteo promised N10 million for every goal for Nigeria, that is a whooping N40 million for the Eagles. With current currency conversion rates, the reward money for the Eagles would total about N75 million. So far Nigerians are happy with this move, as it will stir the Eagles to do more in Russia next year and make us proud. Photo: WhirlWind News
