Despite an impressive FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifiers run that saw Nigeria pick the World Cup finals ticket before any other African country, the Super Eagles will drop three steps down in the latest FIFA ranking that was published today, Thursday by the football governing body.
In the last FIFA Rankings published two months ago, Nigeria dropped from position 38th to 41st in the World Ranking and ranked fifth place in Africa.
After two months and the end of the qualifying rounds, Nigeria will drop to position 8th in Africa, in spite of thrashing Argentina, who are currently holding 4th place in the FIFA World Ranking in a grade one International Friendly that ended 4-2.
The Super Eagles were downgraded due to their last qualifying rounds matchup results against Algeria that ended in a 1-1 stalemate. The Algerians were 26 spots behind Nigeria in the FIFA World Ranking, and a better performance was expected from the Nigerian side.
Nigeria accrued a total of 671 points. Senegal is in first place in the African Ranking after defeating South Africa both home and away. Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo all occupy the remaining four positions to make up the five best teams in Africa in the new FIFA Rankings.
