  Following the clamour for the return of contact sports in Nigeria by sports lovers and athletes, the Nigerian Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has announced that plans are underway for the full return of sporting activities in the country under strict COVID-19 protocols. All sporting activities were suspended in Nigeria since March 2020, as part of measures by the Federal Government to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite calls for the return of sporting activities by Nigerians, the Sports Ministry is insistent on full compliance with COVID-19 protocols before the ban on sports will be lifted by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. However, the Sports Ministry revealed that plans for the resumption of sporting activities including football have been concluded as the only delay hindering the return is approval from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
‘We are hopeful that the reopening of all sports will be shortly upon us. The Ministry has done all that’s necessary and required especially with regard to the COVID-19 protocols. The PTF, Health Ministry and NCDC have guided appropriately. A bit of patience, sports lovers.’ Sports Ministry
With this statement, athletes will not be wrong to start preparing mentally for the task ahead as Nigeria looks towards early preparation for the 2021 summer Olympics in Japan.
