The Lagos social media week is a week-long event that focuses on ideas, trends, and businesses that channel the power of technology to transform communities and innovate industries. The event is on its 6th successive iteration and has recorded remarkable success over the years. With over 15,000 attendees and a global online reach of 454 million, the 2017 edition of the event was a wild success. The annual conference which is now considered Africa’s largest digital media & tech event returns this year at Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos on the 26th of February to the 2nd of March, 2018. Theme According to the organizers of the event, the global theme for SMW 2018 is “Closer,” and the event will explore the intensifying conflict between community and individualism. The conversation will bring together a diversity of perspectives to discuss the most productive ways to harness these forces to drive innovation, improve consumer experiences and bring people together. In essence, SMW Lagos 2018 will pay attention to how technology drives individualism, while also looking at how platforms and apps bring people “closer” and foster community. The 2018 edition of SMW features some new programs including ‘Launched in Africa‘, a platform for African led early-stage startups to showcase their products and services; ‘artHERE’, an art showcase for both local and international African artists; and AfricaNXT Pavilion a roundtable talk where African creatives showcase their ingenuity. Speakers: Some of the speakers at this year’s SMW Lagos include Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, CEO/Co-Founder, Flutterwave, Bayo Adedeji, Snr Finance Manager, Amazon, Adetunji Adegbesan, Founder/CEO, Gidi Mobile, Teju Ajani, Head of YouTube partnerships, Sub Saharan Africa, Google, Shola Akinlade, Co-founder/CEO, Paystack, Onyeka Akumah, CEO/Co-Founder, Farmcrowdy, and much more. One of the top sponsors of the event, First Bank of Nigeria Ltd, also put together some exciting programmes for the week-long event including a panel session that’ll deliberate on the topic, “Financial Inclusion: Banking the Unbanked”. The session will be moderated by Ugo Dre, CEO, Nairametrics and will have the Team Lead, Product Design at FirstBank Digital Lab, Munachimso Duru; CEO, Cowrywise, Razaq Ahmed; and CEO, Fint.ng, Chiwete John-Njokanma as panelists. First Bank would also mount a digital lounge at the event for participants to have an opportunity to engage directly with the bank’s digital products and services.  The bank will host an App Fair all through the event to give Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) technology entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their apps at the lounge.
