While many invest their time and resources solely on themselves, some choose to spend these resources for the good of humanity. One of such individuals that embody the ideals of humanitarianism is Otto Orondaam, founder of Slum2School. Young and passionate, Otto felt the need to create a platform for young children in the slum. Today, he impacts the lives of many children utilising education. At first, Otto was going to be a medical doctor but he took a different path in life when he realised there was a high number of children who were not in school. For him, it was a cause for concern because he would spot children who were supposed to be in school on the street of Lagos doing menial jobs and hawking while on his way to work and back.
“I was going to be a medical doctor but at some point, I realized it was not only through medicine that you could create an impact in society…
My focus was impacting lives and that is why I studied medicine. But while I was in university, I was active in student organizations and I joined the Red Cross, I also joined an organization called AIESEC, It is the world’s largest student-run organization. That gave me the opportunity to start working as a student. So, right from my first year of university, I was already leading teams, organizing conferences and managing events,” he said in an interview with Bella Naija.

He started Slum2School in 2012, a non-profit organisation that provides education and psycho-social support for disadvantaged children. Since its inception, Slum2School has succeeded in training over 3000 young volunteers, won over 15 national awards, and provided free education to over 600 children from the slum.
Otto has been recognised around the country due to his humanitarian efforts. He was recently named as one of 2019’s 100 Most Influential Young Nigerians.
