Over the years, many Nigerian artistes have been nominated for the prestigious Grammy awards and a few have succeeded in clinching an award or two. Nigerian Afrobeat singer Burna Boy was the most recent artiste to be saddled with the responsibility of bringing home the prestigious award. However, he lost out in the World Music Album Category of the 2020 Grammys to Angelique Kidjo. 

The Grammy award is indeed no joke as it represents the highest recognition an artiste can get. Here are 4 Nigerian artistes who have won a Grammy award in the past.

Sade Adu

Nigeria singer, Helen Folasade Adu professionally known as Sade Adu, was born in Nigeria but grew up in Essex, London. While growing up, she took up several interests including singing, fashion design, and modelling. Sade made history when she became the first Nigerian artiste to win a Grammy award in 1986. She won the award for “Best New Artist”. Eight years later, she clinched another award for “Best R & B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals”. A third Grammy followed in 2002 when she won “Best Pop Vocal Album” for the song “Lovers Rock” and her fourth in 2011 with the song “Soldier of Love” for “Best R & B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals.”

Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel, best known as Seal, is a British-Nigerian singer, musician, and songwriter who had his big break with the 1994 hit song, “Kiss From A Rose”. The song won him three Grammy awards in 1996 and was acclaimed worldwide. In 2011, Seal took home his fourth Grammy, making him one of the Nigerians with the most Grammy awards.

Hakeem Seriki aka Chamillionaire is a Nigerian-American rapper, entrepreneur and investor. He started his solo career in 2002 and founded the group “Color Changin Click” which split in 2005. In 2005, he signed with Universal Records and release his debut studio album “The Sound of Revenge” which included hit singles like “Turn it Up” featuring Lil’ Flip and “Ridin” featuring Krayzie Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, which won him a Grammy award in 2007.

Kevin Olusola

Kevin Olusola is a musician, rapper, beatboxer, cellist, rapper, record producer, singer, and songwriter who is acclaimed for his work as the beatboxer for the acapella band Pentatonix. In 2016, Kevin’s group Pentatonic won their first Grammy for their song “Daft Punk”, a medley of songs by Daft Punk. The group went on to win a second Grammy in the same category for “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” which was one of the singles in their ” Christmas to Me” album. Their third Grammy came a year later in the “Best Country Duo/Group” performance category for “Jolene” which featured Dolly Parton.
