Are you often at a loss as to what gift to get a loved one? Have you ever wished you could just tell someone your budget and have them do the work while you get showered with gratitude? Mojisola Saliu studied Mass Communication at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, and now runs The Gift Plug, a business that aims to take gifting beyond just purchasing items, infusing the art with ideas and creating experiences brimming with thoughtfulness.

CN: How would you describe your business and the services you offer?

The Gift Plug is about unique, creative and personalised thoughtful gifting. We understand that getting the perfect gift for your loved ones can sometimes be daunting, with your busy schedule and trying to keep it a secret for the element of surprise as stumbling blocks. We provide solutions all within your specified time and budget. The Gift Plug aims at taking the stress off you by recommending mind-blowing gift ideas with a personal touch, sourcing, boxing, wrapping beautifully and delivering to your loved ones wherever they are. We offer doorstep delivery nationwide, and to select countries outside Nigeria. We want to do all the work while you get showered with gratitude.

CN: What inspired you to start The Gift Plug?

I was always that person people asked to hook them up with one thing or another and I always came through. At some point, I gave a very bad gift to someone special and in a bid to try and do better, the idea for The Gift Plug came. All that was left was to run it by my partner, the Holy Spirit, for confirmation and that was it. Our first gig was this year’s Valentine’s Day and we’ve grown stronger since then.

CN: How did you raise capital for the business?

I put together personal funds and the little savings I had to start the business.

CN: What were your biggest challenges starting out?

The biggest challenge for the business was majorly logistics. We tried out several different methods, most of which failed. Delivery timing is key for gifts because most times, they contain edibles, and it’s also important they get delivered in great condition. We kept trying different logistics companies, some ruined gifts, some delivered pretty late etc. it’s better now because we found out what works for both clients and us and we’re also considering other ways to make it even better.

CN: What role does the internet play in growing your business?

The internet is a big deal for The Gift Plug. It is one of our biggest blessings, especially social media. The business started with a single tweet 6 months ago and our following increases daily. It’s the easiest way to connect with clients, understand their needs and introduce our products and services to them.

CN: How would you rate the customer satisfaction level?

With feedback we’ve gotten from every single client we’ve served and even recipients, I’ll say 150%.

CN: What is your unique selling point and why should Nigerians choose The Gift Plug over competitors?

At The Gift Plug, every single gift delivered is tailored with the recipient in mind, to create a unique experience. We pay attention to details, and we make recommendations with ideas that you normally wouldn’t have thought of. As much as every gift is about the recipient, we also keep the sender in mind and make sure they get the best regardless of their budget. We’ve also gotten great feedback regarding our top-notch client relations!

CN: What do you consider to be the best career decision you have ever made?

That would be resigning from my 9-5 to try my hands at business. It was a risky decision especially as I didn’t have a solid plan but it had to be done.

CN: Which books have changed your life?

Rework by Jason Fried. This book squashes common business traditions we’ve been made to think are the holy grail of business.

CN: What kinds of gifts do you like to receive?

I have a sweet tooth, so a box of cupcakes, doughnuts or even pizza would be much appreciated.
