Africa’s largest retailer, Shoprite, has defied growing security concerns in northern Nigeria by opening its first retail outlet in Kano, the region’s largest city and main commercial hub last Thursday.
The new mall is said to be the biggest, bringing the total of its stores in Nigeria to eight. The manager of the mall, Adulhakeem Abdulganiyu, said that Shoprite is hoping to leverage on Kano’s huge population which provides ample business opportunities; “We decided to expand our reach to Kano as part of our commitment to widen our presence in the Nigerian mega cities.”
Shoprite is clearly determined to cash in on the potential of Kano’s market despite the prevalent security challenges in the northern Nigeria.
