Only yesterday the media was rife with news of a 10-year old boy who committed suicide in his family home in Kentucky, after enduring months of bullying for a medical condition he had no control over.

On January 3, popular Lagos-based disk jockey, Seun Omogaji, aka DJ XGee, was found dead in his room after he allegedly drank a bottle of insecticide.

In July 2018, Spectator Index published a World Health Organization (WHO) study that ranked suicides per 100,000 cases. According to the report, Nigeria ranked 5th highest in the world, with a 15% suicide rate per 100,000 people/year.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults globally, and the sad truth is we actually only hear about an infinitesimal percentage of the suicide cases that occur across the globe every day.

Suicidal depression is real and a global phenomenon. However, suicide is preventable, and it begins from you paying close attention to that friend, colleague, or family member.

There are several signs that can indicate a person battling suicidal thoughts including, sudden withdrawal from people, unexpected mood swings, and feelings of despair.

Most times people facing severe mental difficulties just want to talk, but for lack of a trustworthy listening ear, most end up suppressing their feelings till its eventually too late.
