Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, is confident that Nigeria can defeat Seychelles on Saturday. He yet believes it would be in the team’s best interests not to look down on their East African opponents.
2019 African Cup of Nations
The Super Eagles lost their first game of the
2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers to South Africa earlier this year, and will be looking to make maximum points against Seychelles, to restore their chances of qualifying for the finals in Cameroon next year.
As at Wednesday morning, 18 players were already in camp ahead of the game, and more are expected to fly-in before Saturday.
Nigeria’s World Cup hero,
Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidozie Awaziem, Kelechi Nwakali, Odion Ighalo, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Samuel Kalu and Leon Balogun have already reported to the team’s camp.
Others are Henry Onyekuru, Ogenyi Onazi, Simeon Nwankwo, Etebo Oghenekaro, Francis Uzoho and Jamilu Collins.
Defenders Tyronne Ebuehi, Shehu Abdullahi, William Troost-Ekong and Ola Aina will not be in Seychelles for the game.
Speaking on his game plan without his key defenders, Rohr told the media he would make the best out of the players he’s got.
“…But I think Omeruo should lead in their absence. He has been with the team for a long time and I hope he should be able to cover up for the other injured players who will not be part of the game.
“For us to win, we must not look down on Seychelles because everybody thinks they are no team but if we don’t raise our game we will be shocked.”
– Rohr
