Following the qualification of the Nigerian men’s senior football team, the Super Eagles, for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is set to pay Nigeria a total of $12.5 million. $2.5 million off this amount, is for the Super Eagles to prepare adequately for the tournament next year. The team will receive more cash should they reach the knockout stages of the tournament as they did in the years 1994 and 2014. The 2014 World Cup wasn’t all rosy for the Super Eagles financially, as they had to skip a training session to protest the non-payment of bonus for qualifying for the tournament; the country’s then Sports Minister nevertheless came to their aid swiftly to pay them about $4 million cash in Brazil. Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has expressed his desire for quick payments of due allocations to avoid a pay strike. The team can best their performances in any World Cup appearance, and if the country wants them to be at optimum efficiency at the World Cup next year, then putting all these in place as quickly as possible is very necessary. He told the media; “If we want to do something at the World Cup, we have to prepare well, we want everybody who wants to be part of the team to show the same solidarity we currently have in the team. More importantly, we don’t want the issue of money to be a problem. “The issue of bonuses and allowances, which are the usual African problem we see during the World Cup, must be avoided, such issues will be bad for our preparation. “I have told my officials and the federation president that all (such issues) be cleared before the start of the competition.” About 37 players featured for Nigeria in the qualifying stages of the tournament for Russia 2018 and they are all entitled to a share of the qualification bonus.

  • I hope these guys will be paid soon to avoid them not to concentrate on the training for the world cup in 2018
