Fans and players of Rugby Union in Nigeria have some great news to cheer about as the game is set to make a return to the National Sports Festival 2020. The game which has been absent for ten years, missing out on the past three editions of the Festival held in Lagos, Rivers and Abuja, will be part of the games this year.

Organised by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Sports Commission, the Nigerian National Sports Festival is a biennial multi-sport event that features athletes from the 36 States of Nigeria. Rugby’s last appearance as a medal winning event in the Festival was during the 2009 edition in Kaduna State. It will be recalled that Rugby’s debut at the event was at the 2006 edition during the Gateway Games in Ogun State. However, Rugby had to go through a mandatory demonstration in three consequent events prior making its debut in Ogun.

Tagged ‘’Edo 2020,’’ athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, will participate in this year’s event. Currently, Rugby players from the six geo-political zones in Nigeria are engaged in Zonal Qualifiers ahead of the main event in March, 2020.
