The Legend of Barcelos, as written on their tables and in other literature, dates back to a roasted rooster that crowed to proclaim a man’s innocence. The legend explains the painted red rooster logo found on their crockery and everything else.
Barcelos encourages the outdoor open air café seating style that is common in Europe, so even indoors the tables are well spaced out. They also specialise in chicken, and their ancient marinade recipe involves marinating the chickens for 24 hours before flame-grilling it to absolute perfection. Since it is not dipped in frying oil, it is healthy and very tasty.
This glorious day I checked in for an early meal, and though their chicken is well known, I wanted breakfast. One upside about Barcelos, it is not self-serve in the strict sense, you place your order at the counter, get a number and then sit and wait for your tray to arrive.
Hungry Jill that I was, I ordered the biggest brekky they could offer: the Barcelos special breakfast.
Now this offering was nothing to sniff at. I enjoyed the toast et al, and the waitress was adamant that everything was grilled and not fried, right down to the eggs. But I decided to wait and see how long the meal could hold me up before I felt hunger pangs again.
Top marks for the meal, I lasted long enough to get a late lunch. Caveat- males might take a shorter time, but yes, in my opinion the meal was well worth the money. So if the mood strikes you this weekend to have breakfast out, Barcelos is ready and waiting for you.
