If you live in or visit Ikorodu town, do ensure that you stop at Fatmot Restaurant for lunch or dinner. They have two branches but their main office is at No 55 Lagos Road, beside UBA, Ikorodu.
When you visit a restaurant that’s over 50 years old, you’re definitely expecting to enjoy the experience and professionalism that has been ingrained into the business over the years. I was thrilled to see a really organised setting. Wrought iron chairs with leather seats, glass-topped tables that can sit up to six. To the left is a line of servers sitting behind a show-glass advertising the meals.
Their first question is; ‘Swallow or rice?’ You decide the one you‘d like and they go from there. After they serve the meal you move over to the cashier who gives you the ridiculously cheap bill and then you find yourself a seat.
Under swallows they offer: amala, eba, semo and wheat. Soups include, bean soup, ewedu, okra, egusi and others.
On the rice side they offer only white and jollof rice, with plantain and moi-moi. Interestingly, they do not serve fried rice. It’s nice to find a business that decides to leave out some meals and not feel at all limited by their decision.
Then the protein to go with the meals: catfish, croaker, turkey, chicken, whole boiled eggs, meat, stockfish, goat meat, bokoto, and bush meat.
Based on the recommendations from regular customers, I had the amala and ewedu with the special stew (omi obe) that goes with it. Of course I ordered the catfish as well. Let’s just say 50 years is no joke. The food was prepared in true Yoruba style, with enough oil and spices. The amala was soft and smooth; the best Amala ever. I wish you were there to enjoy it.
And you can, just go over to any of their locations and order up! You might even be lucky enough to meet some of our celebrities there too; I hear it’s a hangout for them. The food is that good.
