The Nigerian football community was thrown into great mourning following news of the sudden demise of former Super Eagles and Enyimba defender Romanus Orjinta.
Orjinta was found dead in his Enugu apartment by his neighbours on New Year’s eve. He was believed to be alone at the time of his death as his children were understood to have travelled for the Yuletide holidays.
The Enugu-born defender had lost his wife five years ago and was left alone to cater for his children. He made waves with Enyimba FC of Aba in the 2003 CAF Champions League, where he was paired with Obinna Nwaneri in centre defence to lead Enyimba to cup glory.
His performance earned him a place in the Super Eagles’ squad for 2004 CAF African Cup of Nations in Tunisia where the team won bronze.
He had an illustrious club career in Glo Nigerian Premier League, featuring for Enyimba as well as Rangers International of Enugu, Wikki Tourists of Bauchi and the defunct Julius Berger FC of Lagos.
He also had a brief spell in Norway with Lillestrom for just a season before returning to Rangers International to finish his career.
May his soul rest in peace.
