The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has named 25 athletes to represent the country at the upcoming Region II ECOWAS U-20 and Senior Open Athletics Championships inNiamey 2019.

The list released by the Technical Director of the AFN, Sunday Adeleye, also includes the names of four coaches who will be joining the Nigerian contingent at the event.

The Nigerian team is expected to take part in a number of track and field events including 100m, 200m, 400m, triple jump, discus, 400m, high jump, long jump, and relays.

In the U-20 girls category, Rosemary Chukwuma, Tariore Anita, Favour Ofili, Obamuwagun Onaara and Utitifon James made the list. While Enoch Adegoke, Favour Ekpekpe, Shedrak Akpeki, David Olowookere and Omamuyovwi Erhire, will be flying Nigeria’s flags in the U-20 bus category.

For the senior men and women category, Arowolo Emmanuel, Jeremiah Jakpa, Emmanuel Ojeli, Joseph Edafiadhe, Austin Nwoye, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Patience Okon-George, Grace Ayemoba, Precious Okoronkwo, and Blessing Ibrahim, have been shortlisted.

In the relay events, Enoch, Jeremiah, Shedrack, and Emmanuel will be in green and white in the male category, while Joy, Rosemary, Favour and Patience will race for Nigeria in the female category.

The officials expected to accompany the team to the championship are Emily Oyase, Godwin Ogogo, Abiodun Johnson and Yakubu.

While speaking to newsmen about the team’s preparation for the event, Ogogo, who is also the head of athletics coaches, said the overall performance of the shortlisted athletes have been very “inspiring and encouraging”, as he encouraged them to focus on wining their events.
