Interim head coach of the Nigerian national football team, Augustine Eguavoen, has handed an invitation to 25 players ahead of Nigeria’s two-legged Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers clash against the Black Stars of Ghana scheduled to hold on March 25 and 29, 2022.
Leicester City of England star Ademola Lookman has been handed his debut international call-up after recently getting clearance from FIFA to play for Nigeria. Former FIFA U-17 World Cup star Akinwunmi Amoo also got his maiden invitation to the senior team, while Watford FC of England striker, Emmanuel Dennis, returns to the team after the 2021 Nations Cup invitation drama.
The trio of Taiwo Awoniyi, Peter Olayinka, and Chidozie Awaziem, who were part of the 2021 AFCON party was excluded from the squad and placed on a standby seven-man list which also includes Jamilu Collins who was at the 2021 AFCON.
Glasgow Rangers of Scotland central back, Leon Balogun, who missed out on the 2021 AFCON due to an injury is back in the team alongside his clubmates Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey. Regulars such as team captain, Ahmed Musa, vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, and others also made the squad.
Ghana will host the Super Eagles on March 25, 2022, at the 20,000 capacity Cape Coast Sports Stadium, while the return leg will be at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. The camp will officially open in Abuja on March 21 as the list is expected to be trimmed to 24 players.
