Adamu Adamu noted that the implementation was part of measures aimed at encouraging teachers in the country to improve on quality services delivered in schools, stating that teachers possess the power of shaping and reshaping the lives of youths in the country as well as enhancing the potentials of learners in the country. The minister also emphasized the government’s resolve to ensure that teachers get quality training in terms of engagement to ensure consistency and that the professional development of teachers is a top priority.
‘Only great teachers can produce excellent people and students that will make the future of our country great. A positive or negative influence of a teacher on any child will have an effect on that child. Therefore the federal government is ensuring quality education to access…To address these challenges, my administration has approved the following for teachers and the teaching profession. That in order to attract investment in the teaching profession, the quality of the introduction of bursary award has been restored.’ President Muhammadu Buhari

Further, the Nigerian Education Minister announced the introduction of a special pension scheme which will enable the teaching profession to retain its experienced workers and also the retirement age for teachers has been extended to 65 years alongside the new duration for teaching which has been set at 40 years. The new welfare packages for teachers include making provisions for rural posting allowance, science teachers allowance, and peculiar allowance. Teachers posted to rural areas will also benefit from the low-cost housing building project and teachers in the country will now be opportune to get at least one refresher training on an annual basis to serve as a benchmark towards improving teaching and learning practices. The reform will also see to the ‘’expansion of the annual Presidential Teachers and Schools Awards to cover more categories and for the outstanding.” To safeguard the future of the teaching profession in Nigeria, the President also approved the reintroduction of bursary award to students of education courses in Nigerian Universities and Colleges of Education, as well as an assurance for automatic employment once they graduate from school.
‘The payment of stipends to Bachelor of Education students as well as granting them automatic employment after graduation is now a government policy.’ BuhariTeaching practice in Universities and Colleges of Education will now be funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
