Following earlier plans to renovate the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, has announced that work on the phase two part of the remodeling process would commence soon. This announcement was made at the inauguration of General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
The airport started to see change in January 2012, when Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced that the old domestic terminal of the airport would be demolished for complete renovation. Domestic operations were moved to the international terminal because according to Henrietta Yakubu, the Deputy General Manager, Public Affairs of FAAN, “The old terminal is really becoming dilapidated and quite small for passengers’ movement.”
In a bid to facilitate travelling for all passengers, Ms Oduah informs private jet owners that the new terminal will be open for their use, adding that in the next few months, work would also begin on an ultra-modern international terminal for the airport.
This project is part of the MoU between Nigerian and Chinese Governments for the construction of five international airports in the rapidly commerce growing states of Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.
“It is expected that the remaining terminals under this phase will be inaugurated and be put to use in the next few months, just as the second phase of the project, involving the remaining 10 airports in the country is commencing” elaborates the minister. “It is important to modernize the industry to international standards.”
“FCT and Nigeria air travellers do not deserve anything less,” she concluded.
