  The world of music and activism mourns the loss of Onyeka Onwenu, a legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, and politician. Onwenu passed away suddenly on July 30, 2024, after a captivating performance at a private party. She was 72.

Onwenu’s career spanned over four decades, during which she made an indelible mark on the Nigerian entertainment industry. Born on January 1, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, she was the daughter of D.K. Onwenu, an educationist, and politician. Her upbringing in a family that valued education and social responsibility deeply influenced her career path. Onyeka Onyeka’s foray into the entertainment industry began in the late 1970s when she returned to Nigeria after completing her education in the United States. She earned a Master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York. Her debut album, “For the Love of You,” released in 1981, quickly established her as a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music scene. Her unique blend of highlife, pop, and gospel music resonated with fans across the nation. Beyond her musical prowess, Onyeka Onwenu was a passionate advocate for social change. She used her platform to address pressing issues such as women’s rights, child welfare, and the plight of the underprivileged. Similarly, her 1984 documentary, “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” exposed the corruption and mismanagement of Nigeria’s oil wealth, earning her both acclaim and controversy.

Onwenu’s versatility extended to acting, where she delivered memorable performances in Nollywood films such as “Mothers-in-Law” and “Half of a Yellow Sun.” Her talent and dedication to her craft earned her numerous awards and accolades. In addition to her artistic achievements, Onyeka Onwenu ventured into politics. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. Later, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja. Initiatives to empower women and promote gender equality marked her tenure. Onyeka Onwenu’s sudden death has left a void in the hearts of her fans and colleagues. Her final performance was a testament to her enduring talent and passion for her craft. As the news of her passing spreads, tributes pour in from the globe, celebrating her life and legacy.
