Africa Boxing Union (ABU), Super Lightweight champion, Olaide Fijabi, may miss his title defense bout in Dakar, Senegal, due an injury he sustained while in training on Saturday.
The Nigerian, who defeated Tanzanian boxer, Shedrach Ignas Koberto, to claim the title in December last year, was scheduled to meet Abderrazak Houya of Senegal on Saturday, October 20
th 2018 at the Canal Olympia arena in Dakar, for a title defense bout. However, due to an eye cut injury, Fijabi sustained while sparring with fellow boxer,
Rilwan ‘Real One’ Oladosu, he may not be in fighting shape for his title defense bout.
“Fijabi is actually injured, and we have written to organisers of the event in Senegal to move the fight by two weeks. It is a title bout, and there is no way Fijabi can make the trip to Dakar for the October 20 fight with such an injury. It is not done anywhere in the world. We are still waiting for response from the organisers.”
– Fijabi’s coach, Joe Mensah (Guardian).
According to Mensah, Fijabi is now responding to treatment, and in a few weeks, he will be ready to defend his title anywhere if the ABU sanctions it.
Fijabi has a record of 11 straight wins (5 KOs), while his Senegalese counterpart has won 10 fights with a single defeat.
