Nigerian sprint queen, Blessing Okagbare, is back in the business of dominating the tracks with her second back-to-back victory.
The 200m Africa record holder emerged the winner of the Women’s 200m event at Prefontaine Classic held in Stanford, USA on Sunday, 30th June 2019.
Okagbare finished in a time of 22.05s, beating Olympic 100m and 200m champion, Elaine Thompson, and double European Champion Dina Asher-Smith.
The Nigerian’s time of 22.05s in the women’s 200m is now the second fastest time in the world, after Thompson’s 22.00s 200m run at the Jamaican Senior Championships.
In Sunday’s event, Thompson trailed Okagbare to take second with a time of 22.21s, while Asher-Smith finished in 22.42s.
In the 2019 Rabat Diamond League in June, which was Okagbare’s 60th appearance on the Diamond League circuit so far, the Nigerian took a huge stride in her continental rivalry with Cote d’ Ivoire’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou, winning the race in a Season’s Best time of 11.05secs.
Recall that in Okagbare’s debut Diamond League race in Rabat, she ran 11.11secs to place second behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson.
It would seem Okagbare is finally taking the wheel back with a trail of victories behind her, as she continues to prove her worth to the athletics world.
Go girl!
