Ex-Nigerian international Odion Ighalo, is the only Nigerian footballer that made it to the 10-man shortlist of players for the African Footballer of the Year award. Out of the 30-man list initially released by the Confederation of African Football, Odion Ighalo is the only player left in the 2019 AFCON bronze-winning Eagles after the elimination of Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi.

Ighalo will vie for the Africa top prize with nine other players inclusive of:

Mohamed Salah (Egypt and Liverpool)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon and Arsenal)

 Sadio Mane (Senegal and Liverpool)

Riyad Mahrez (Algeria and Manchester City)

André Onana (Cameroon and Ajax)

Hakim Ziyech (Morocco and Ajax)

Ismail Bennacer (Algeria and AC Milan)

Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal and Napoli)

Youcef Belaili (Algeria and Ahli Jeddah)

The final 10 is an outcome of the first phase of voting carried out by CAF Technical & Development Committee, inclusive of a panel of media experts. The performances of shortlisted players in 2019 was a major yardstick for voting. The last phase of voting for men’s and women’s African Footballer of the Year, as well as the Coach of the Year for male and female categories, will be selected by Head Coaches/Technical Directors, and senior national teams captains from CAF Member Associations.

For the African Women’s Player of the Year category, Asisat Oshoala is the only Nigerian in contention for the award after Uchenna Kanu and Chiamaka Nnadozie were eliminated.
